Data Architect
Location:
Remote/Hybrid – Office-based in Warrington, UK
Reports to:
Chief Digital Officer
Role Summary
Role Description:
The Data Architect will be responsible for designing and governing the overall structure of Blinx Healthcare’s data systems, ensuring they are scalable, secure, and aligned with clinical, operational, and analytical needs. This role is central to defining how data is collected, integrated, stored, and utilised across the organisation, supporting advanced use cases in interoperability, analytics, population health, and research.
The Data Architect will work closely with engineering, product, clinical, and governance teams to deliver a robust, compliant, and future-proof data platform, built on AWS, Redshift, Aurora, and OMOP-based models using SNOMED CT and other healthcare coding standards.
Key Responsibilities
Data Architecture & Modelling:
- Define and maintain the enterprise data architecture, supporting structured and unstructured healthcare data flows.
- Design and oversee implementation of data models, including clinical models (e.g., OMOP, SNOMED CT, FHIR) and operational schemas.
- Establish data lake, data warehouse, and data mart architectures, ensuring they align with Blinx’s product and analytics goals.
- Work with engineering teams to implement scalable, efficient schemas in Redshift, Aurora, and PostgreSQL.
Governance, Standards & Compliance:
- Develop and maintain data standards, dictionaries, and lineage documentation to support data quality, traceability, and consistency.
- Collaborate with IG and compliance teams to ensure all data architecture aligns with NHS IG, GDPR, ISO 27001, and DSPT requirements.
- Support clinical safety case development through data architecture that upholds data integrity and auditability.
- Define policies for master data management, data retention, de-identification, and data sharing.
Integration & Interoperability:
- Design data pipelines and architecture to support real-time and batch integrations with NHS services (PDS, SCR, EPS, MESH) and third-party platforms.
- Enable interoperability across systems and domains, incorporating FHIR, HL7, and custom API-based data flows.
- Collaborate with the integrations team to ensure consistent data models and APIs across all product services.
Analytics, Insight & Advanced Use Cases:
- Support the delivery of population health, operational insight, and research analytics by ensuring data is well-structured and queryable.
- Design data models to support machine learning, predictive analytics, and clinical decision support pipelines.
- Ensure analytical environments are performance-optimised and compliant, with clear access controls and audit capabilities.
Leadership & Collaboration:
- Provide technical guidance to data engineers, developers, and analysts across teams.
- Lead the evolution of Blinx’s data architecture strategy, ensuring it scales with organisational growth.
- Stay up to date with emerging data architecture patterns, healthcare data standards, and cloud data technologies, integrating them where relevant.
- Engage with clinical and non-technical stakeholders to ensure the data architecture serves real-world healthcare needs.
Skills & Experience Required
- Proven experience as a Data Architect, Senior Data Engineer, or equivalent in a healthcare, life sciences, or regulated tech environment.
- Expertise in data modelling and schema design, including experience with OMOP, SNOMED CT, FHIR, and HL7.
- Strong experience designing architectures using AWS data services, including Redshift, Aurora, Glue, S3, Step Functions, and Lake Formation.
- Proficient in SQL and data warehousing, with experience optimising large datasets and analytical queries.
- Deep understanding of data governance, security, and compliance frameworks, particularly GDPR, NHS IG, and ISO 27001.
- Experience designing data pipelines, ETL/ELT workflows, and real-time streaming architectures.
- Familiarity with data catalogues, metadata management, and lineage tools.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, particularly with non-technical users and clinical stakeholders.
Desirable Skills
- Experience implementing clinical and operational analytics platforms using OMOP, SNOMED, or NHS datasets.
- Familiarity with machine learning or AI platform architecture in regulated environments.
- Experience working with data mesh or data fabric architectures.
- Knowledge of event-driven architectures, including Kafka or Kinesis.
- Exposure to graph databases or semantic data modelling.
- Relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Data Analytics – Specialty, CDMP, TOGAF) are advantageous.
- Knowledge of Gen AI and Data science approaches
